This would be a crazy amount of debt to shoulder for either of these degrees. I assume you are combining a very high undergraduate debt with the debt from a master's program, because very few schools in the country would charge that much for a master's degree. Most create a payment plan that looks worse than filing a bankruptcy in the long run. They'll ask you to stop paying for 3 years, the point where creditors are likely to accept anything. Then, the forgiveness of debt actually gives you a 1099 as if it were income. More taxes there!

Consumer Credit Counseling of America is the best firm out there. They are very good, and they don’t charge an up-front fee. If you are asked for one, remember that it is ILLEGAL to do that–a reputable firm will not request that you pay $1000s of dollars to REDUCE your debt.
