Can SSI be taken by a collection agency?

If the collection agency gets a judgment, they still cannot garnish SSI. They also cannot attach your bank account if the ONLY funds in the account are from SSI. If other funds are mixed in the account, it’s all fair game.
They can still lien personal property. However, unless the debt is a large amount, they probably won’t bother with a lien. The lien can’t force sale of your home but if you do sell or refinance the lien would have to be satisfied first.SSI benefits are exempt funds and are not subject to seizure or collections. However, if you mix exempt funds (like SSI) with non-exempt funds, then the entire account is subject to seizure (up to the balance owed). So, keep exempt funds separate from non-exempt funds.
