What do you think of debt relief companies?

I would recommend a debt relief company but make sure it is a not for profit organization. They are there to help you negotiate with the credit card company to either reduce the interest or stop it from accumulating. They will only charge you a small amount of money to do this usually around $50.00. However, since you are going to be getting a settlement in a few months I would negotiate with the credit card company directly and then pay off the full amount when you get your settlement.I don't think to much of them. You can negotiate with the credit card companies just as easily as the debt relief companies. Contact the card companies directly, explain your situation to them. Contacting them in writing is going to be best, however over the phone is OK too as long as you take good notes and get the name or ID number of the person you contacted.
There is really not going to be much to negotiate with them as long as you can/will pay the minimum payment each month. The exception being the interest rate they are charging. You might be able to get them to reduce the rate some if your credit is still good(Depending on the divorce). A cardholder who is making the minimum payment right now but will pay off the entire balance in the next 12 months or so is the LEAST of their worries right now.
One last note. Don't count your divorce settlement dollars before they are hatched. I recommend coming up with an alternate plan to pay off the debt in case the divorce settlement dollars are less than you expected. That's when you will REALLY need to work out a manageable settlement with your creditors.
